Verbos são palavras usadas para descrever ações, estados ou ocorrências, compõem a parte principal do predicado de uma oração. Já preposições são pequenas palavras que conectam dois elementos em uma oração ou frase. O uso correto de verbos e preposições é essencial para se garantir o entendimento da sentença desenvolvida.

Alguns verbos são geralmente seguidos por preposições, as quais vêm antes de um objeto indireto. Essas são chamadas preposições dependentes, e são seguidas por um substantivo ou um gerúndio (terminado em -ING).

Neste sentido, o estudo de "Collocations" em inglês é importante para que se faça o uso da preposição correta com determinado verbo. Collocation é uma expressão formada de uma palavra dominante (substantivo, adjetivo ou verbo) e uma preposição ou estrutura gramatical como um verbo no infinitivo, formando uma relação fixa entre eles.

Alguns verbos são mais usados em escrita acadêmica. Esses verbos podem ser significativamente utilizados em ambos idiomas. Porém, em alguns casos, a preposição que segue o verbo no português nem sempre é a mesma no inglês. Abaixo segue alguns exemplos de verbos em inglês e suas respectivas preposições (Collocations):

Account for (something) – Responde por (algo) ou Representa (algo)

“This treatment accounted for a variance of 95% of the dataset.”

Agree on (topic) / with (someone) – Concorda sobre (algo) / com (alguém)

“A few studies have agreed on such findings.”

Aim to (something) – visar (algo)

“The study aimed to the investigation of... /The study aimed to investigate the...”

Be applied to (something) or for (something) – ser aplicado a algo ou para algo

“The models were applied to the data for investigation of the results.”

Be associated with e não to

“These parameters are associated with the history of falls.”

Be composed of (something) – ser composto por (algo)

“Treatments were composed of control, yeast culture, fungal fermentation extract, and non-ionic surfactant.”

Be related to e não with

“Some of these factors are related to the treatment.”

Be responsible for e não by

“Both factors are responsible for a much greater net production of precipitation.”

Be suggested by (someone)

Belong to

“Most of the studied species belong to the suborder Brachycera.”
